This bluff-sitting neighborhood overlooks the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. Located two miles south of the leading business district, Mistletoe Heights is still considered rural when the landowner, Harvie C. Lawrie, set a 2-inch spoke stake oak wagon at one of the street’s corner trees. It was in 1892 that Mistletoe Heights Land Company bought the said property. Though it was then considered too expensive for farming yet too remote for development, the Fort Worth government took a chance and earnestly developed the area. Mistletoe Heights has gone a long way since its development. Now, there are countless homes in the neighborhood registered in the county’s Historic Resources as historically significant.
The community itself is more than enough reason to visit Fort Worth. Aside from Mistletoe Heights, the neighborhood also takes pride in its equally historic school -- Mistletoe Heights - Lily B Clayton Elementary School.
When this school opened way back in 1922, it was first known as Mistletoe Heights Elementary School. It started as a tiny, pink brick-made building that now forms part of the school’s southwestern building corner. It has a simple yet strategic architectural design. This four-classroom school has rectangular learning spaces constructed and designed by Harry B. Friedman and Wiley G. Clarkson. A few years after it opened, it was named after Lily B. Clayton, a high school teacher at Central High School.
In 1924, four more classrooms were added to the existing structure, creating the T-shape structure of the building. A partial basement was also constructed at this time. The school received continuous improvements until it finally became a 14-classroom, 2-story structure in 2003.
Relive the history of this infamous structure and appreciate the efforts of the developers and builders who made this building thrive. Visit Fort Worth this weekend and get ready to be amazed.
